Community Health Information Overview

St. Luke's Episcopal Health Charities gathers health and well-being data on communities within the Episcopal Diocese of Texas. The primary and secondary data is stored on the Community Health Information System (CHIS), an on-line, interactive website that creates a concise picture of the demographic, health and social data of the 57-counties of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas. The CHIS currently contains demographic and vital information (census, ethnicity, sex, births, deaths) from 1990-2004, as well as uninsured and Child Health Insurance Program data. The CHIS features interactive mapping for many different geographic levels and jurisdictions. Comparisons can be made among all 57 counties as well as with state and national indicators. The Community Resource Directory was added in 2001 in partnership with United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast and includes a database of 12,000 health and service programs throughout a 13 county area. Users can identify, locate and contact resources either by type of service or geographical area. The CHIS not only houses data, maps and tables on key social and health issues but also allows users to layer community data with community resources on interactive maps to receive a more complete picture of a community’s strengths and needs. Project Safety Net is a bi-lingual resource listing all safety net clinics in Harris County, Texas. The newest feature is the Breast Health Portal listing current and free health access information for breast health services in Harris and contiguous counties.
